From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Konigsburg, E.L
Newbery Award
Readability: 6
Setting: New York City
Age of Main Characters: Claudia, 12 and James, 9.
"How much did you give him?" Claudia asked.
"All I had," Jamie answered.
"So how are we going to get home, Miss Taxi Rider?"
Claudia and James ran away from home to the big city. Claudia had become unhappy at
home because of her "ill treatment". She had decided to take Jamie with her because she knew
Jamie had always saved his money and that he would be able to finance her scheme.
She and Jamie spend a whole week in the Museum of Art. They sleep there, they attend
tours there, they bathe there, and they fall in love with the statue called "Angel". James and
Claudia learned by searching through Mrs. Frankweiler's files that the statue was created by
Michelangelo.
They are returned home by Rolls Royce, and become, by their own choice, the grandchildren
of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
